Guido Guidi. Over time, 1956-2024 is the title of the monograph dedicated to one of the greatest protagonists of Italian photography, belonging to a generation of authors who have redefined our relationship with the contemporary landscape: Guido Guidi (Cesena, 1941). Open to the public from December 13, 2024 in gallery 1 of the MAXXI and realized in collaboration with the Guido Guidi Archive, the exhibition, the most extensive ever created, is the result of intense research conducted alongside the photographer in his studio and archive in Ronta di Cesena. The exhibition's path proceeds on two intertwined levels: the vertical one of photographic prints, with over 400 works and numerous unpublished ones, for a total of 40 sequences constructed by the author, and the horizontal one of display cases, which brings us into contact with the dense archive materials. Ordered chronologically, the exhibition retraces the author's main series: from the beginnings and experiments of the Sixties and Seventies, to the personal research and commissions on the landscape of the Eighties and Nineties, up to the most recent projects of the 2000s.His erudite reflection on the language of the image has given rise to a poetics of vision among the most incisive in contemporary photographic culture. Through photography, Guidi conceptualizes the heart of the issues concerning the system of visual representation: each image conceals a reflection on the act of seeing, on the means used to record it, and on the passage of time, regardless of whether his gaze rests on a fragment of familiar and everyday landscape, on the architecture of the great masters, or whether his visual message must pass through his photographs and through his teaching activity in which he has been engaged since the Eighties, to the point of being considered a master by multiple generations of authors. The exhibition, realized in collaboration with important Italian and international institutions that have supported Guidi's work over time, such as ICCD and CCA, aims to address Guidi's research from a new point of view, that of his archive: home, artist's studio, place of work, life, and meeting for young authors. An additional contribution to the exhibition is represented by the multi-channel video project created by director Alessandro Toscano, which engages in a visual interpretation of Guidi's research and methodology. On the occasion of the exhibition, MAXXI acquires an important nucleus of the author's works from the series Di Sguincio, Facciata, Dintorni, Raccolta Indifferenziata, and In Archivio, which are added to the three existing nuclei in the Photography Collections of MAXXI Architecture and Contemporary Design, which also includes the series dedicated to the Tomba Brion by Carlo Scarpa. On December 20, 2024, the Municipality of Cesena also chooses to pay tribute to the photographer by inaugurating the exhibition Guido Guidi. In the field: a selection of 100 photographs taken in the Eighties in the Cesena and Romagna territories, destined to become part of the collection of the Malatestiana Library as part of a pilot project for the cataloging of the Guidi Archive carried out by the Municipality of Cesena and the Emilia Romagna Region.
