From 19 October to 27 November 2025
From October 19 to November 27, 2025, the spaces of the MAXXI Corner host for the first time Chris Soal, one of the most influential South African artists on the contemporary scene, with his Spillovers: Notes on a Phenomenological Ecology, a unique collection of site-specific works that intertwine sculpture, biology, and ecology. a flow of forms, materials, and perceptions for a journey into the heart of matter, where the everyday and the discarded are transformed into complex and vital visions.
Toothpicks, beer bottle caps, cement, and sandpaper become, in Soal's hands, visual organisms that transcend their original function, evoking cellular proliferations, geological stratifications, new architectures of the living. Each work of the artist is the result of a gesture of accumulation and stratification that leads the material to generate other possibilities of itself, transforming into unexpected entities on the edge of a research and a poetics that go beyond reuse, but delve into a reflection on biological transformation and the interconnection of systems, staging a perceptual ecology that concerns life itself.
The exhibition, curated by Cesare Biasini Selvaggi and produced by the D’ARC Foundation in collaboration with Piero Atchugarry Gallery (Miami-Pueblo Garzón) and Montoro12 Gallery (Brussels-Rome), thus guides the visitor through a creative process defined by the concept of spillover, a term that indicates the phenomenon of "overflow". Materials overflow, surpassing their original function and becoming something else. Perception overflows, called to exceed categories and boundaries. The imagination overflows, moving from the inorganic to the biological, evoking proliferating cellular forms, geological layers accumulating over time, organisms multiplying in space.
