Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art

The Fondation Cartier pour dell'arte contemporain is a Paris exhibition center located in the Montparnasse district. The Fondation Cartier deals with various sectors of contemporary art, including design, photography, painting, video art, fashion, performance-art. It aims to promote and support contemporary art and culture through various activities, such as thematic and monographic exhibitions, acquisitions, patronage and support of young emerging artists, promoting events that involve artists and intellectuals of international importance. The headquarters of the Fondation Cartier is an extraordinary architectural work designed by the architect Jean Nuvel, who also designed the building of the Institut du Monde Arabe and the Musée du Quai Brainly. The building is made of glass and steel and is characterized by being based on the ideas of transparency, fading and dematerialization. Inside the center it is also possible to visit a large garden, the "Theatrum Botanicum", a name taken from the medieval herbaria of medicinal herbs, as the garden is inspired by the botanical gardens of medieval monasteries. Inside there are 35 different species of trees and about 200 native species of French flora. In the garden there is also the presence of birds that are gradually disappearing in France.
