The National Archaeological Museum and the ancient city of Cosa

The National Archaeological Museum and The Ancient City of Cosa is located in Ansedonia, in the town of Orbetello in the Tuscan Maremma. The Museum was born thanks to the active collaboration between the Italian State and the American Academy of Rome. The Museum collects the artifacts found in the archaeological area of Cosa of Roman origin. The excavation campaign took place in 1948 and the materials were kept in a small building. At the end of the seventies it was decided to create a special museum large enough to accommodate the greatest number of exhibits. Of great value is certainly the section of ceramics divided into different classes and areas of origin: black-varnished, Italo - Megarese, thin-walled, sealed ceramics and common ceramics. Worthy of note are the ivories and bronzes of the 1st century AD which testify to the uses and customs of antiquity. The interior decorations of the aristocratic domus are also exhibited inside the museum. The fragments of plaster have been reconstructed and exhibited in display cases. Certainly of great importance is the House of the Birds dating back to the Augustan period. Here were the frescoes with the colors of red, green and yellow.
