From 5 December to 8 March 2026
The MAN Museum in Nuoro announces, for the upcoming season, a solo exhibition by Franco Mazzucchelli (Milan 1939) titled Blow Up. Curated by Marina Pugliese and the result of a protocol of understanding with the MUDEC in Milan, the exhibition retraces the research of the Milanese artist from the Sixties to today, through a selection of works and photographs that document the experimental, social, and participatory nature of his work.
In line with a research that MAN is conducting on artists sensitive to the themes of sustainability and collectivity, authors of works that have been able to activate, over time, the community through sharing practices, Mazzucchelli's exhibition returns, step by step, his artistic action unfolded in space, his inhabiting of public places, characterizing them, qualifying them, and inviting citizens themselves to reclaim forgotten areas through a new dimension of meaning and participation.
The exhibition highlights a selection of works connected to the projects A. TO A. (Art to Abandon), including interventions carried out in front of the Alfa Romeo in via Traiano in Milan (1971), in the square of the Artistic High School in Turin (1971), or in the Piazza dei Priori in Volterra (1973). These actions, born from the idea of "abandoning" large inflatable PVC structures in public space, represent a gesture of openness, an invitation to interaction and proxemic experience, as well as a critical reflection on the liberation of art from traditional circuits. The intervention near the Alfa Romeo factory was initially intended for the children of the nearby playground, but unexpectedly offered a moment of leisure and imagination for the workers, and then even turned into a political tool, with the workers using it to create a barrier to the passage of machines. Furthermore, in Volterra in 1973 - on the occasion of the exhibition on environmental art curated by Enrico Crispolti - his inflatables became protagonists of a collective celebration, while in Turin the installation of a large inflatable arch in the urban area generated a different reading of the landscape and, at the same time, of the social fabric.
