FMAV Fondazione Modena Arti Visive presents on June 7, 2024 (until October 6, 2024), at FMAV Palazzo Santa Margherita, the exhibition Marina Caneve. On the ground among the animals curated by Daniele De Luigi, a project supported by the General Directorate of Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture within the twelfth edition of the Italian Council, presented by FMAV Fondazione Modena Arti Visive. The project, one of the 11 selected by the Evaluation Commission in the Area 1 - International commissioning and acquisition of new works for Italian public museums, was presented during its realization at numerous international cultural partners, first landing in France at the CAP Centre d'Art in Saint-Fons and the IIC in Lyon, then last November in Antwerp at the FOMU Foto Museum in Belgium, in collaboration with the IIC in Brussels; in December 2023 it was instead in the Netherlands, at FOTODOK, a space dedicated to international photography in Utrecht, thanks to the support of the IIC in Amsterdam. Triennale Milano finally hosted a talk with the artist last February 2024. On the ground among the animals was also developed thanks to the scientific and cultural partnership with the Foundation for Biodiversity Research in Paris. In April, the FMAV high training school proposed a masterclass with the artist, two days with Marina Caneve to deepen her working method, between project planning, editing, and research. Finally, on April 26, 2024, an exhibition was inaugurated in Slovenia at the UGM - Maribor Art Gallery museum spaces, a project partner of FMAV, as part of the EKO 9 Triennial of Art and Environment. The Modena exhibition presents the complete project and constitutes the final stage. The title of the project is taken from one of the letters written to Felice Bauer by Franz Kafka, whose centenary of death is commemorated this year. With On the ground among the animals, Marina Caneve explores the ambiguities inherent in the dominant role that humans exercise over nature and the tensions that emerge from their relationship with other animals. Starting from an analytical study of the Natura 2000 project, the network of ecological corridors promoted by the European Union to preserve biodiversity, the artist establishes a visual connection between the connecting infrastructures for wildlife, the videos generated by monitoring systems, and the landscape of natural reserves, touching on key themes such as migration and freedom of movement, the rights of non-human animals, the conservation of ecosystems, and ultimately, the possibility of rethinking the role of human beings in the world.
