The Numismatic and Medal Cabinet of Milan conserves an important collection of coins and medals consisting of approximately 280,000 specimens . The collection is located in the Castello Sforzesco and brings together two distinct collections, the one belonging to the Municipality of Milan and the one owned by the state.
It offers a significant historical picture of coin production starting from the archaic issues of the mints of Asia Minor (6th century BC) up to the Italian and European minting of the modern and contemporary age. Among the valuable coins are the archaic coins in electro of Asia Minor, Magna Graecia, the late Roman Empire (III-V century), the series of the Milan mint, the medieval and modern mint of the Germanic area and the Italian, with particular reference to the production of the northern mints (Genoa, Venice, Mantua and Parma).
The Numismatic and Medal Cabinet is divided into nine sections: Greek coins; Republican Roman coins; Roman imperial coins; Roman provincial coins; Byzantine coins; Coins of the Milan mint; Modern foreign currencies (with a large Arab sector); Modern Italian coins; Medals (15th-20th century).
