From 14 September to 26 January 2025
After 40 years since the last exhibition in Milan, Edvard Munch (Norway, 1863-1944) is celebrated with a major retrospective promoted by the Municipality of Milan - Culture with the patronage of the Ministry of Culture and the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Rome, and produced by Palazzo Reale and Arthemisia in collaboration with the MUNCH Museum in Oslo.
Undisputed protagonist in the history of modern art, Munch was one of the main symbolist artists of the 19th century and is considered a precursor of Expressionism, as well as a master in interpreting the deepest anxieties and aspirations of the human soul.
Munch's life was marked by great and early pains. The premature loss of his mother at only 5 years old and his sister, the death of his father, and the tormented relationship with his fiancée Tulla Larsen were the primordial emotional material on which the artist began to weave his poetics, which then combined in a highly original way, thanks to his extraordinary artistic talent, with his passion for the energies unleashed by nature. His gazeless faces, twisted landscapes, powerful use of color, the need to communicate unspeakable pains and very human anxieties have managed to transform his works into universal messages and Munch into one of the most iconic artists of the 20th century.
The exhibition - curated by Patricia G. Berman, one of the world's leading scholars of Munch, in collaboration with Costantino D'Orazio for support in drafting in-depth texts on display - tells the entire universe of the artist, his human journey, and his production through a path of 100 works, including one of the lithographic versions of The Scream (1895) kept in Oslo, The Death of Marat (1907), Starry Night (1922-1924), The Girls on the Bridge (1927), Melancholy (1900-1901), and Dance on the Beach (1904).
To enrich the Milan exhibition, a rich schedule of events involving various cultural entities of the city is planned, which will delve into the figure of the artist and expand on the themes of his works.
