The show

“Gethsemani”, the wall painting created at Focus -1 of the Museo del Novecento, tells of a visionary garden through signs and iconography, a multidimensional landscape without space and time. A place where man can awaken from the sleep of the world to immerse himself in the "Dream of unity" with nature, recognizing himself as an integral part of it and not an antagonist.
The project was born as part of "Level 0", the ArtVerona initiative in collaboration with fourteen Italian contemporary art institutions which aims to promote emerging artists chosen at the fair and presented by each museum.
Gabriella Ciancimino's work, selected in 2020, reflects on the dynamics of "freedom to be" that can be acquired through overcoming spiritual, social, cultural and political stereotypes, in line with the thoughts of Leda Rafanelli - Italian political and anarchist writer - of which he shares dear themes such as integration and social ecology aimed at cultural change.
In her studio Ciancimino processes libertarian print materials found in various archives around the world, liberty floral stylistic features by the architect Ernesto Basile, botanical tables of plants from the Mediterranean area and a short poem she wrote on the role of the gardener, who does not cultivate a unilateral vision, but brings the earth closer to the sky. For Ciancimino, "Gethsemani" thus becomes a meeting point between different cultures: a garden in which species from Palestine - the landscape of primitive Christianity - coexist together with stylized flowers taken from the frontispieces of some books published by the Sociale publishing house of Milan, founded by Rafanelli who, throughout his life, attempted to combine his anarchist thought with his spiritual research
on Islam.

“My research is focused on the concept of “Relationship” from which the tendency to conceive a work as a moment of meeting/confrontation between individuals derives. Starting from the assumption that I strongly believe in the role of art as a catalyst for social change, the ideal field of experimentation becomes public space. In my most recent works, I analyze the relationship between humans and plants in Nature at the basis of the constitution of a Landscape as a "place" of reflection and at the same time of safeguarding historical memory and collective action. The anthropological study is accompanied by experimental research aimed at identifying dissonant elements to insert into the landscape, thus generating visual cracks in which reality is "ecologically" modified. I have thus developed a tendency to create site-specific works and collective works, using different media such as video, music, installation, drawing, graphics and sculpture. My work is an invitation to dialogue on the concept of resistance and freedom applied to the relationship with the surrounding environment, experimenting with the social ecology theorized by Murray Bookchin through the involvement of the community in the creation of the work and in the transformation of a place into space in which to experience freedom, breaking the hierarchy between Artist and User".
