The exhibition, conceived and curated by Giacomo Zaza and promoted by the National Museum of Matera, will be inaugurated on Friday 22 March at 6.30 pm , which moves between contexts that intertwine and meet: public and private space, the road and intimacy, the socio-cultural sphere and imaginary paths. It highlights the diversified trend of Cuban artistic practices, freeing them from any labeling. It highlights the production of new meanings through performative video experiences.
The exhibition itinerary is articulated through the video art experiences of twelve Cuban artists , protagonists of contemporary research inside and outside the island: Juan Carlos Alom, Analía Amaya, María Magdalena Campos-Pons, Javier Castro, Susana Pilar Delahante Matienzo, Luis Gómez Armenteros , Tony Labat, Ernesto Leal, Glenda León, Sandra Ramos, Grethell Rasúa and Lázaro Saavedra.
«The broad gaze given to artistic research from Cuba, with particular attention to the protagonists of one of the most interesting visual experiments in the Caribbean area – underlines Annamaria Mauro, director of the National Museum of Matera – confirms the openness of the Museum to the contemporary world international. The monumental complex of the former San Rocco Hospital continues to be a laboratory for exploring today's creativity, capable of offering shared imaginaries and experiences from different cultural fields."
«In the artists on display – explains the curator Giacomo Zaza – a reflective vision prevails, imbued with ironic and paradoxical, rough and restless traits, as happens in certain Cuban literature, from Virgilio Piñera to Pedro Juan Gutiérrez. A vision accompanied by the internalization and scrutiny of history (with its derivatives), as well as a scenario full of syncretistic attitudes. Cuban video practice brings with it a marked performative drive. The artists chosen for Matera move between the founding values of experience (solidarity, the freedom of the individual) and the search for a poetic dimension and a sensitive space, courting the magical world".
