A country suspended between two worlds, in a precarious balance between the legacies of the Soviet past and the push towards a European future. This is the story told by the exhibition Moldova. The Cold Divide 2023-2026 by the internationally renowned photojournalist Alessandro Grassani, scheduled from October 4 to 18, 2026 at the Viscontea Tower in Lecco as part of the 29th edition of the Immagimondo festival. Organized by Les Cultures Aps in collaboration with the Municipality of Lecco and the Urban Museum System of Lecco, the exhibition intertwines photographs and interviews to provide a perspective far from the news: a slow, layered narrative that seeks complexity beneath the surface of the events.Thirty-three photographs are displayed in the Tower, complemented by four panels set up in Piazza XX Settembre, offering the citizens and visitors an immediate and broad view of the author's work. His story unfolds along the Security Zone, the buffer territory between Moldova and Transnistria, a pro-Russian enclave frozen in time since the ceasefire of 1992. It is here that Moldovan villages survive beyond the Russian checkpoints, territories suspended in a geopolitical limbo. It is also a land of contrasts, from the strong pro-Russian identity of the autonomous region of Gagauzia to the encounter with the new generations, increasingly oriented towards Europe. To enhance this sense of suspension, the choice was made to use expired films for the landscapes - all shot in the Security Zone - expired before a symbolic year like 1989, with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the gradual dissolution of the Soviet bloc. A stylistic choice, with time deposited in the very material of the image: grain, chromatic alterations, imperfections. The film becomes a narrative device, a bridge between past and present: not just a means of capture, but an echo of a suspended history that resurfaces in the very texture of the photograph. As the author of the photographs emphasizes, in Moldova time is not a line. It is an accumulation, an interruption, a return. The exhibition will be inaugurated on Saturday, October 3 at 6 pm in the conference room of Palazzo delle Paure, in the presence of the photographer and Alberto Basciani, professor of Contemporary History and Russia at the University Roma Tre.
