From June 15th to October 6th, 2024, the Fondazione Biscozzi | Rimbaud di Lecce presents the exhibition Vittorio Matino - Divampa colore, curated by Nathalie Vernizzi Matino and Gabriele Matino, the sixth exhibition appointment since 2022 of the institution founded in 2018 by the spouses Luigi Biscozzi and Dominique Rimbaud with the aim of promoting modern and contemporary art through a program of exhibitions that has seen as protagonists Angelo Savelli (The artist of white, 2021), Salvatore Sava (The other sculpture, 2022), Grazia Varisco (Perceptive sensitivities, 2022-2023), Mirco Marchelli (Voices in the chapter, 2022-2023), Yuval Avital (Lucus, 2023-2024). Vittorio Matino (1943-2022), a painter of Apulian origins trained in Veneto, made color the central element of his poetics. After spending the 1960s assimilating the irradiation of color-light typical of the Venetian painting tradition, he moved to Milan in 1971, with long stays in Paris, traveling in Europe and the United States to deepen his knowledge of the masters of European and American modernity. The artist also spent long periods in Puglia, rediscovering his roots, to the point of choosing Otranto as his summer residence. For twenty years, until the summer of 1993, Matino actively participated in the political and cultural life of Otranto, contributing significantly to the defense of the territory and the protection of its heritage. The artist has over a hundred solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions in Europe and North America, in galleries, museums, and public spaces. His works are found in major Italian museums and private collections, including Fondazione Prada, Museo del Novecento, and Gallerie d'Italia in Milan, and the Mart in Rovereto. The exhibition marks Matino's return to his land of origin with an important monographic review, the first after the painter's passing, presenting twenty canvases selected from the artist's personal collection, most of them exhibited for the first time with the intention of creating a total immersion in color and an enveloping exhibition space for the viewer. The exhibited works trace years of intense production and summarize the stages of Matino's artistic journey from 2004 to 2013 with the spread of light and color on the canvas, from intense white (Dittico rouge et noir, 2005) to deep black (Solfeggio in nero, 2004; Nigro Aires, 2005), exploring all possible shades of the color range (Viola di sera, 2005; Acero rosso, 2009; Piccolo verde, 2009; Anima nera, 2013). Also noteworthy are Surya's Grace and Red for Chennai, paintings created after a trip to India in 2008 that belong to a group of works partly exhibited at the Sundaram Tagore Gallery in New York in 2009.
