Jacopo Benassi Libero! at Palazzo Ducale in Genoa takes stock of the artist's most recent research as a photographer, focusing on the deconstruction of the body of photography and photographic vision. In a journey that is a large installation, where photography merges with sculpture, performance, music, and painting, the exhibition explores the world of Jacopo Benassi (La Spezia, 1970) where all his most famous subjects are recognized, from portraits to places of underground music, from the most mundane objects of everyday life to fragments of nature.
The exhibition, curated by Francesco Zanot and presented in the spaces of the Loggia degli Abati from July 12 to September 14, focuses on the artist's recent production, highlighting the key stages that have led to the development of a personal, complex, and recognizable language where photography, sculpture, and performance merge. Through a large installation that connects and intertwines some of Benassi's most well-known works with other unpublished productions, the exhibition constitutes a profound inquiry into the role of photography today and its ability to resist and engage with the contemporary. For Benassi, photography is indeed a tool of action and transformation, not just representation, and the image a open device.
The exhibition path will unfold through the rooms of the Loggia degli Abati, redesigned by the intervention of Jacopo Benassi, taking shape in a photographic installation that reflects on the relationship between image, support, and context. Completing the exhibition is an unpublished work - which will then be transferred to the Museum of Contemporary Art Villa Croce to become part of the permanent collection - produced by Benassi during his residency at Palazzo Ducale, where from June 1 to 30 he will transfer his studio. As is customary in his practice, the studio becomes part of the creative process.
