From April 13 to October 5, 2025, the MA*GA Museum in Gallarate (VA) celebrates the 75th year of the National Visual Arts Prize of the City of Gallarate - simply known as the Gallarate Prize - with an exhibition that tells its history through an experimental rearrangement of the permanent collections of MA*GA which gathers the most important voices of Italian art from the post-war period onwards, from Carlo Carrà to Mario Radice, from Lucio Fontana to Fausto Melotti, from Carol Rama to Luigi Ontani and many others.
The exhibition is produced by the Gallarate Prize as part of the XXVIII Edition and by the MA*GA Museum, with the contribution of the Lombardy Region - project Horizons in Motion for the call CULTURAL OLYMPICS - Invitation 2025-2026, an initiative included in the Cultural Olympiad of Milan Cortina 2026.
For the occasion, recent acquisitions are presented within the PAC 2024 - Contemporary Art Plan – Luciano Fabro, Vera, 1969; Ketty La Rocca, Appendix for a supplication, 1972 – and of Photography Strategy 2024 – Giulio Paolini, The world before, 2020 – promoted by the General Directorate of Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture.
The exhibition, titled Single Act. Gallarate Prize 1950-2025, curated by Emma Zanella, director of MA*GA, and Alessandro Castiglioni, deputy director and curator of MA*GA, presents itself as a unique grand narrative that stages not only the twenty-seven editions of the Gallarate Prize, the works, the artists, the curators, the art critics but also the hundreds of people who, in seventy-five years, have participated in the birth and evolution of the Prize and the Museum itself.
The initiative is enriched by the exhibition of archive documents, unpublished photographic testimonies, critical insights on a reality that lies at the foundation of one of the most significant Italian museums of contemporary art.
