Verified profile

Giacinto Cerone (1957-2004) was one of the most original and free Italian sculptors, far from groupings, schools, movements, styles, or trends of the moment. The forcefulness of his language is measured starting from the different materials used both in sculptural production (wood, ceramics, plastic, metal, marble, plaster, stone) and in drawing, mostly independent from the realization of plastic works, as well as in the use of techniques linked to speed and gesturality.
Faenza was a preferred destination for Cerone since 1993, when at the Gatti workshop he created a series of glazed ceramics using perhaps unorthodox but highly expressive working techniques, experimenting with a great variety of colors and shapes.
The MIC, which owns several works by Cerone in its collection, dedicates to the artist, twenty years after his passing, a major exhibition that brings together about 45 sculptures of various materials and periods, plus a series of 35 drawings (some of large format), privileging Cerone's own way of working: by thematic series (such as the red Malerbe, the Vietnamese Rivers, the Plasters, the Metals) or by individual works with emblematic and in some ways iconic and funerary character (such as Cenacolo and Ofelide). It is in this tension, within the diversity of materials, that the curatorial structure of the exhibition The Necessary Angel is played out, that sort of approximate figure, "glimpsed, or seen for an instant" described by the American poet Wallace Stevens and often outlined in an ungraspable way in the imperfect and liminal figures of Cerone's interrupted statuary.
The exhibition, curated by art critic Marco Tonelli, promoted by the MIC with the support of the Cerone Archive and private lenders, aims to outline the figure of an all-round sculptor and a total sculpture (capable of stretching horizontally or leaning against the wall), without remains, of an artist attentive also to the way of installing his exhibitions as if they were works in themselves.
