Pontormo's house

The birthplace of Jacopo Carucci, known as Pontormo, which is now part of the National Association of the Houses of Memory, was purchased by the Municipality of Empoli in 1995, the year following the important exhibition organized by the Municipality on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of his death. of the illustrious artist. There are exhibited objects and works that recall the expression of the master; including, for example, the facsimiles of the sheets that Jacopo drew in preparation for the Saints he painted on the altar table of the nearby church of San Michele. There is, in a beautiful edition, also in facsimile, the famous Diary of the artist. The connections between the house and the painter are ideally illustrated by a panel, a beautiful ancient replica of the Madonna del Libro, a work of Pontormo which has so far remained unknown in his autograph edition, "undoubtedly the most copied work" of him, "and, in all likelihood, the most copied Madonna of the entire Florentine sixteenth century ”. There are also some archaeological finds that were found during the excavation work carried out for the restoration of the building. The multimedia installation Quiet, silence and solitude, specially created for these environments, allows an immersion in the time lived by the artist, allowing a better reading of the works evoked. At the nearby church of San Michele Arcangelo in Pontorme there is an altarpiece depicting the saints John the Evangelist and Michael.
