MuVE Museum of Glass

The Empoli Glass Museum is set up in the evocative spaces created inside the Magazzino del Sale, one of the oldest buildings in the city, whose construction dates back to 1365. In this building, enlarged over the years and connected to a salt mill that was located near the nearby river port on the Arno, the salt coming from the salt pans of Volterra was deposited and preserved, which, once arrived in Empoli, was then distributed in Florence or in the surrounding area. The MuVE exhibition itinerary focuses on the glass industry that has strongly marked Empoli's identity in terms of urban planning and local economic development, as evidenced by the documentary Vetro verde, made in 1958 by the great Florentine documentary maker Lionetto Fabbri , which accompanies the visitor throughout the journey. The narration begins on the ground floor where the history of the first production of green glass from Empoli is illustrated and where the workplaces and the processing phases are discovered. The objects on display - bottles, flasks, demijohns, glasses - are those of common use which for decades have populated kitchens, houses, tables and cellars and which have characterized the customs and habits of daily life of the last century. Through documents, photographs and work tools, the changes that have taken place in the glass production of Empoli are retraced, from manual to semi-automatic and fully mechanized processing. The second part of the exhibition on the upper floor is dedicated to the processing of artistic glass, one of the most original expressions of Italian artistic craftsmanship of the 1930s. A large and articulated production, consisting of table sets and furnishing objects in green glass, which evolved until the 70s of the last century and is flanked by creations in white and colored glass and in crystal, a prompt response from the glassworks empolesi to the requests of Italian and foreign customers.
