The Hungarian National Gallery is the largest public museum documenting and presenting the process of the emergence and development of fine arts in Hungary. It was established in 1957 with the aim of presenting Hungarian art from the eleventh century through medieval times until the present day. The museum moved to its present location, the former Royal Palace of Buda, in 1975. Its collection comprises around a hundred thousand works, allowing the Gallery to showcase the development of Hungarian fine arts over centuries, from the Middle Ages to Modern times and the present day. In its permanent exhibitions, visitors can discover masterpieces by Master MS, Pál Szinyei Merse, Mihály Munkácsy, József Rippl-Rónai and Dóra Maurer.

In 2012, the Hungarian National Gallery and the Museum of Fine Arts were merged to form one institution. During 2018 and 2019, the Collection of International Art after 1800 moved in the National Gallery from the recently renovated building of the Museum of Fine Arts, which now serves as the home of art from antiquity until the year 1800. In the permanent exhibition From Delacroix to Vasarely – Collection of International Art after 1800, paintings by some of the greatest international artists like Gustave Courbet, Paul Cezanne, Claude Monet, Auguste-Pierre Renoir or Simon Hantaï are on display.
