From 1 October to 31 March 2023
The Kingdom of the Ill exhibition is the second chapter of the TECHNO HUMANITIES long-term research program launched in 2021 by Museion Director Bart van der Heide with the TECHNO exhibition (running until March 16, 2022). Over the next few years, the program will continue to involve Museion's spaces and activities by exploring the way in which phenomena connected to technology, ecology and global free trade are intertwined with each other and with our identities.
Through the work and contribution of international artists, activists and activists, Kingdom of the Ill seeks to respond to the ongoing discussions on health and disease, contamination and cleansing, care and abandonment , questioning how and by whom a body is defined. healthy or sick, how welfare systems and corporate care determine the reality of health care, and how common definitions of a healthy body can be broken.
The title of the exhibition - curated by Sara Cluggish and Pavel S. Pyś with an installation signed by Diogo Passarinho Studio - refers to the work of the American critic Susan Sontag Illness as Metaphor (1978), indicating a research that, starting from her reflection , investigates the relationship between the individual and contemporary social, corporate and institutional systems that affect the experience of care and well-being. In the face of burnout, exhaustion, dwindling public health support, rampant capitalist exploitation, and the lack of distinction between the online and offline world, can one still be truly sane?
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought these issues and the fragility of the human body to the fore, while forced isolation has changed social habits, for example making isolation the norm for many people who have faced the disease. Kingdom of the Ill encodes a significant moment when inequities became apparent, a moment that led us to re-imagine fundamental healing methods and networks of support, well-being and friendship .
