Brecht house

The Brechthaus is a literary museum dedicated to the life of one of the most important German writers of the 20th century. Using text documents, images and texts from his literary works, the museum's permanent collection offers a lively look at Augsburg's famous son. While brief introductions to life and work are provided on the ground floor, as well as the reception of his work, the rooms on the first floor are each dedicated to a stage in Bertolt Brecht's life: Brecht's parents and childhood and youth in Augsburg constitute the prelude (1898-1917), followed by the end of the First World War to the move to Berlin (1918-1924). In the other rooms, the first phase in Berlin (1924-1933), exile (1933-1947) and the period following the return to Berlin until his death (1947-1956) are presented. Brecht's biography is always accompanied by precious originals, including first editions, sets, living and mortuary masks or the surviving bedroom of his mother Sophie (1871-1920). Bertolt Brecht's work can also be read in the hall on the ground floor.
