Maximilianmuseum

The Maximilianmuseum is a museum in Augsburg dedicated to applied arts. Founded in 1855 in honor of the Bavarian King Maximilian II, it is the oldest museum in the city. The museum is housed in a 15th century aristocratic house in the historic center of the city. It preserves goldsmith works, bronze works of the late Renaissance, scientific instruments, clocks and automata, historical models, objects relating to the history of the city and to the arts and crafts. The exhibits all come from the time of the imperial city, when Augsburg was the artistic metropolis of Germany.

A highlight of the Museum is the Viermetzhof, a hall with a free-standing glass roof donated by the honorary citizen and patron Kurt F. Viermetz (1939-2016). Here are exhibited the original restored sculptures of the famous fountains of Augusta. The figures, created around 1600 by court sculptors Hubert Gerhard and Adriaen de Vries, are among the museum's greatest treasures. The figures represent Augustus, Mercury and Hercules, with rich mythological references, glorifying Augusta as a Roman foundation and free imperial city, which at the time could already boast a history of over 1,600 years.
