It is one of 633 woodcuts made by Wohlgemut and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff for the Nuremberg Chronicle, a compendium of world history, written by humanist Hartmann Schedel (1440-1514), consisting of more than 600 pages. The illustrations were commissioned to Wohlgemut in 1487-88, the same years in which Dürer was an apprentice in the great workshop of this German painter and typographer, who is credited with having updated the aesthetic canons of German woodcut.
