The artist from Trieste chooses an allegorical composition of easy reading and strong visual impact to advertise the Exhibition. He places at the helm of a locomotive, symbol of the speed of progress, a young Mercury seen from behind, accompanied by the allegorical figure of Science. The two are about to emerge from the darkness of the tunnel of the tunnel into the light of a large plain. On the horizon, small but recognizable, is the silhouette of the Milan Cathedral. This vision by Metlicovitz will prove to be the most successful and popular image of the Exhibition.
