Verified profile

Absolute masterpiece of Fattori's maturity, the large painting, signed and dated 1888, is the last purchased by Grieco, with the specific intention of donating it to the Pinacoteca di Bari. ”Ante litteram and with a perspective construction that the shift towards the left of the group (highlighted by the presence, at the bottom right, of the bollards) makes it intriguing and almost dizzying. Two very long lines of cavalrymen, starting from the bottom, progressively approach us, widening at the center and reuniting, until they are reduced to a single rider, in the foreground, giving life to a sort of rhombus, punctuated in the center by scattered figures of lancers. Sun, dust, heat, mist are admirably evoked by the ocher hue of the street and by the progressive rarefaction of the definition of the figures as one proceeds towards the background. C. Gelao
