The tabernacle, probably of domestic origin, presents one of the most typical subjects of Renaissance plastic, the embrace between Mother and Son as a symbol of a new humanitas, with the Virgin who is seated, with grace and elegance, on a classical throne in faldistorio, decorated on the left side with a “pine cone” plant motif, a symbol of fecunditỳ, and an embroidered cushion. The relief with the Madonna with her naked Son standing, with her hand resting on the right breast, has been attributed to Donatello's youth activity (Bellosi 2002; Pisani, 2009; Cavazzini 2013) for the vibrant reinterpretation of classical antiquity and the 'high quality' of the modeling, which in various passages reveals the signs of a delicate stick hatching.
