The tabernacle used to stand in front of the old Church of the Convent of the Poor Clares, close to the river Elsa. It was probably commissioned by the abbess of the Convent and the Prior of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta of Castelnuovo d’Elsa. The tabernacle is frescoed by Benozzo Gozzoli with stories from the life of the Virgin Mary, starting from her parents Joachim and Anne. The recount unfolds on the four walls of the tabernacle, along the upper section, with the scene of the Expulsion of Joachim from the Temple, Joachim's Dream, the Meeting of Joachim and Anne outside the Golden Gate of Jerusalem and the Nativity of Mary. The lower section was damaged by the flooding of the river Elsa and, for conservation purposes, the frescoes were detached and can now be admired in their full monumental beauty in the BeGo Museum.
