The tabernacle was located in front of the ancient church of the Convent of the Poor Clares, near the river Elsa. Probably its commission is due to the abbess of the Convent and to the prior of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Castelnuovo d'Elsa. The tabernacle is frescoed by Benozzo Gozzoli with stories from the life of Mary starting with her parents, Joachim and Anna. The narration unfolds on the four walls of the tabernacle, along the upper register, with the scenes of the Expulsion of Joachim from the Temple, the Dream of Joachim, the meeting of Joachim and Anna at the Golden Gate of Jerusalem and the Nativity of Mary. The lower register was compromised by the floods of the Elsa river and for conservation reasons the frescoes were removed and today they are visible in all their monumentality in the BeGo Museum.
