The tabernacle was frescoed by Benozzo Gozzoli, with the help of his sons and his workshop, in 1484. It was located on the Via Francigena, at the crossroads for Castelnuovo d'Elsa. It was commissioned by the prior of Castelnuovo, Grazia di Francesco, who appears kneeling in the scene of the funeral of the Madonna, on the right wall. On the left wall is the Assumption of Mary into Heaven with the delivery of the belt to St. Thomas. On the central wall is depicted the Madonna on the throne nursing the Child between Saints Peter and Catherine of Alexandria on the right, Paul and Margaret of Antioch on the left. The mothers who in ancient times went to the tabernacle to ask for the healing of their children from whooping cough turned to Our Lady. From this derives the name of the tabernacle of the Madonna della Coosse. For conservation reasons, the frescoes were removed in 1970 and are now in the BeGo Museum.
