The Vitra Design Museum, located in Weil am Rhein, Germany, just a few minutes from Basel (CH), is one of the most important museums in the world dedicated to industrial design and architecture. Founded in 1989 by Rolf Fehlbaum to make public the private collection of his company, Vitra, the museum explores the relationship between design, art, architecture, and everyday life. The permanent collection includes over 400 key pieces – iconic chairs designed by Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, Alvar Aalto, Verner Panton, Michael Thonet, and others – covering the evolution of design from the 19th century to today. A separate space is dedicated to the Barragán Archive, with a permanent section of the Barragán Gallery inside the Vitra Schaudepot.
The museum hosts two major temporary exhibitions each year in the structure designed by Frank Gehry, alongside experimental projects in the small Vitra Design Museum Gallery. Among the upcoming exhibitions: The Shakers: A World in the Making (summer 2025) and Catwalk!, dedicated to the evolution of the fashion show between October 2025 and February 2026. The Vitra Schaudepot, opened in 2016 by Herzog & de Meuron, exhibits over 400 objects of historical and contemporary design on rotation, along with the Wunderkammer and the Science Fiction Design.
