The Museum of Sacred Art is located inside the Church of Sant'Agostino, which in 2017 underwent a reorganization, thanks to a testamentary bequest. In addition to the original furnishings of the church, left unchanged, showcases and other paintings from churches in the Volterra area have been placed.
The exhibition mainly gathers works from the Cathedral of Volterra and other city churches and is composed, in addition to paintings, of liturgical objects such as reliquaries, furnishings, and utensils.
Among the paintings stand out the Madonna enthroned with Saints John the Baptist and Bartholomew painted by Rosso Fiorentino and the magnificent panel depicting theAnnunciation by Benvenuto di Giovanni, dated 1466, and the reliquary bust in silver and gilded copper, attributed to Antonio del Pollaiolo, depicting the hermit Saint Ottaviano.
In addition to the main nave, the museum is also located to the left of the altar, where you can admire, among others, a painting by the Volterran artist Baldassarre Franceschini depicting Saints Thomas of Villanova and Clare of Montefalco and an important illuminated book from the 1300s.
