The restoration, which began at the end of the 1950s, saw the director Licisco Magagnato and the designer Carlo Scarpa closely collaborate both in thinking about a philological restoration of the spaces, and in choosing and placing the works that are functionally and emotionally closest to the idea of the museum as total work of art. Since then, the Castelvecchio Museum has become a point of reference.
