The exhibition presents some crucial phases of Terry Atkinson's work, one of the most important English artists of recent decades. Recently entered into the collections of the Tate Gallery in London, his work is part of the forefront of international conceptual research: its uniqueness, however, lies in having translated profound theoretical content into a language of strong visual value. In 1968, Terry Atkinson, together with David Bainbridge, Michael Baldwin, and Harold Hurrell, founded Art & Language, a group that aimed to challenge established practices and representations of the art system: based on the strength of this critical attitude, a debate developed that between '68 and '82 gathered around the group almost fifty artists. However, Atkinson, in the evolution of the movement's ideologies, identifies aspects that no longer belong to him: according to him, conceptualism itself gradually reaches a form of inevitable calcification, and from 1974 he abandons the perspective of "We" to return to that of "I". When he leaves Art & Language, he is thirty-five years old and has already a solid and well-aware artistic path. The ground on which his investigation takes place is that of the present in which he lives and questions its dynamics. Wars, which he considers forms of political action conducted by other means, are one of his research areas, but always, even before the group experience, at the center of his interest is also the desire to investigate the language of art itself. For over sixty years, Atkinson has in fact linked the dynamics of human history to those of aesthetics, intertwining the tensions of composition with those of the individual and his actions. From this perspective, his entire work is a map that reveals the close connections between images, symbols, and texts. None of these elements is neutral, and every detail is a magnifying glass on the cipher of power often hidden in every message: his is therefore a profound work of "knowledge", of studying the value of time and human attitudes in participating in time itself.
