The show

Ca 'Pesaro , in collaboration with White Cube , presents the solo show with twelve works created over the last two years which are inspired by the works of some of the great Venetian artists to reflect on the loss of homeland and the condition of exile.

Shaw , who grew up in Kashmir and currently lives in London, creates extremely elaborate and painstakingly detailed paintings that represent parallel and visionary worlds imbued with deeply personal and psychological meaning. Often monumental in size, the works combine hybrid influences, bringing together time and space to cross landscapes, seasons, myths and eras.

In his new series of works, Shaw transforms his garden in south London into a verdant backdrop for the now lost world of Kashmir and the imaginary paradise of a childish landscape tinged with the melancholy of exile. Italian Renaissance painting lends the narrative framework, in particular Tintoretto 's Venetian paintings, including Santa Maria Egiziaca (1582–87) from the Scuola Grande di San Rocco and the Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple (1551–56) from the church of the Madonna of the Garden, in addition to the iconic La Tempesta (1506–08) by Giorgione of the Gallerie dell'Accademia .

“Raqib Shaw's paintings take the viewer to travel between the natural wonders of Kashmir and probably the most prosaic worlds of South London. But it is here that the artist has created his own paradise of memories, with views of distant city buildings and cathedral-like skyscrapers. Done with a meticulously detailed and extraordinarily measured sense of design and color, each painting is designed to amaze and takes time to discover new details with each new look. " Sir Norman Rosenthal
