From October 12, 2024 to March 3, 2025, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection presents Marina Apollonio. Beyond the Circle, the first solo exhibition ever held in Italy dedicated to Marina Apollonio (b. 1940), one of the leading figures of international Optical and Kinetic Art, supported and collected by Peggy Guggenheim.

Curated by Marianna Gelussi, art historian and independent curator, with about a hundred works coming from the artist's studio, as well as from national and international museum institutions, including the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome, the Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Turin, the MART in Rovereto, the Neue Galerie in Graz, the Kunsthalle Recklinghausen and the Ritter Museum in Waldenbuch, Germany, the Museum Haus Konstruktiv in Zurich, the Fondation Villa Datris de l’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue in France, the exhibition is a well-deserved tribute to the artist from Trieste. Highlighting the rigor of her visual research, spanning painting, sculpture, and drawing, static, moving, and environmental works, black and white and chromatic research, technical and material experiments, Marina Apollonio. Beyond the Circle traces the artist's career from 1963 to the present day.

A figure with a distinctly international body of work, this tribute in the halls of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, her adopted city where she moved as a child and took her first steps as an artist, becomes even more precious and highlights the role of Peggy Guggenheim, a discerning and visionary collector. In 1968, after visiting Apollonio's solo exhibition at the Barozzi gallery in Venice, Guggenheim commissioned Relief 505, which is still part of the collection, a testament to her support for young Italian avant-garde artists. The exhibition fits into the museum's exhibition tradition, which, alongside internationally renowned exhibitions, hosts events aimed at celebrating the protagonists of the national art scene of the post-war period, supported by the patron, such as Edmondo Bacci, who recently had a monographic exhibition dedicated to him, Tancredi Parmeggiani, and now Apollonio.

Marina Apollonio. Beyond the Circle is accompanied by a richly illustrated catalog, published by Marsilio Arte, with texts by the curator Marianna Gelussi, Arnauld Pierre, art historian, Max Hollein, art historian and director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and an interview with the artist by Cecilia Alemani, curator and art historian.
