The show

Marc Quinn presents HISTORYNOW at the National Archaeological Museum of Venice , marking a new material chapter in his ten-year History Paintings project. Forty-eight new paintings and an accompanying “ STELE ” sculpture are presented in dialogue with the museum's collection of classical antiquities, inviting reflections on past and present society.

Quinn 's works, which begin life as iPhone screenshots , replicate the digital portals through which humans absorb, consume and share news, a phenomenon greatly accelerated by the events of the past two years. Through the screens, society witnesses cultural events that change the world: accidents, human tragedies and natural disasters, together with moments of pop cultural lightness in an incessant flow of contents.

HISTORYNOW plays a scrolling journey through digital feeds, whose content swings between celebrity news and current affairs, with global reach. Unveiled in a space usually reserved for reflections on the past, links are discovered between the HISTORYNOW series and the museum's classic sculptures, offering reflections on the ways and speed with which news and stories have been communicated throughout history. In this exhibition Quinn returns to the themes explored throughout her career, asking questions concerning the great social issues and the human condition.

More than a chronological presentation, the paintings are grouped in a thematic conversation with the classic collection displayed in each room. Quinn explores historical but fully current themes such as the ideals of Beauty, Power, War, the acts of Heroism . The last room of the exhibition hosts a multimedia experience that offers an additional context to the series of paintings, including interviews with people related to their imagery or content. Through these paintings and subsequent interviews, Quinn tries to reflect on these viral and often incomplete stories to bring viewers back to the heart of the subject, unpacking our compulsion towards consumption and “reactions”.
