From 15 November to 15 January 2023
The exhibition The construction of a skyscraper . The Schiller Building by Adler and Sullivan, curated by Marco Pogacnik, open until 15 January 2023.
The initiative was born as part of the Salotto Longhena project. MUVE and IUAV in dialogue between art and architecture according to a memorandum of understanding signed between the two institutions which since 2016 has made it possible to organize numerous workshop events, seminars and exhibition projects aimed at promoting dialogue between the arts and modern architecture and Contemporary. The purpose of the exhibition is to present the reconstruction of the architectural organism conceived by Adler & Sullivan in 1891 by investigating its constituent elements through detailed drawings and digital models (BIM): the steel metal structure, the brick and terracotta walls with their anchoring systems, the structure of the floors (made in the form of 'tile arches') and, finally, the internal cladding, which combines plant design and decoration.
The construction of the Schiller Building has contributed significantly to the definition of a new architectural typology: the American skyscraper, in its version developed in Chicago after the devastating fire of 1871. The patient work of reconstruction and redesign of the structures and masonry and decorative aspects of the building was curated by a group of master's students from the Iuav University of Venice, coordinated by professors Mario De Miranda (metal structures), Paolo Borin (BIM modeling) and Marco Pogacnik (historical research).
