The project room of the Gallery is enriched with a reflection on painting and the theme of portraiture, with a small but precious selection from the series of works created by the artist Biagio Gibilterra from 2021 to 2024. They are all paintings taken from mugshots taken from 1920 to 1930 at the central police station in Sydney and already the subject of an exhibition at the Sydney Museum in 2017-2018 entitled Underworld: mugshots from the Roaring Twenties. The photographs that inspire Gibilterra's intense paintings refer to people arrested by the Australian police in the twenties and indicted for crimes such as theft, murder, extortion, and drug trafficking. It is a varied humanity, with members of small and large criminal groups, from conspirators to crime bosses. The gaze of the people portrayed is fixed while the expression varies: sometimes the protagonists seem like actors intent on telling us their own story or reciting a monologue. All this is captured in Gibilterra's paintings, which focus on the face and personality of the subject, capturing or imagining what their dreams and fears could have been and interpreting their audacity, rarely fear, and willingness to almost pose for a moment of self-celebration. The over 100 mugshots in the Australian Museum's collection have fueled Biagio Gibilterra's reflections for three years and his tireless research on the theme of portraiture and the possibility of delving into the lives of the characters represented. The result is a series of intense and expressive works that leave the viewer curious and pervaded by a vague sense of unease.
