The Archaeological Museum of Udine is located in the historic center of the city and is located inside the east wing of the Castle. The exhibition includes a historical itinerary which highlights the collectible nature of archaeological research between the end of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The itinerary is divided into six rooms dedicated to the interest and activities of Friulian collectors. The collection includes artifacts, in particular Magna Graecia vases, protohistoric, Roman and early medieval grave goods, found in the area. The museum's objective is to enhance ancient history by illustrating the aesthetic and historical value of the artifacts. The museum houses a section dedicated to Count Francesco di Toppo, a leading exponent of the Udine nobility and collector of archaeological finds. One of the most important donations was from Augusto de Brandis, exponent of an important noble family, who donated his impressive collection in 1924 consisting of 400 terracotta pieces, 6000 Greek coins and 8000 Roman coins. The most important artefact in his collection is a stamnos attributed to the 5th century BC painter Menelaus. The exhibition itinerary is also included in the porticoes of the castle with the stone finds that include epigraphs, monuments and sculptures from the Roman era
