SilenzioSuono - SoundSilence is the exhibition, curated by Elena Volpato, with which the new collector's chapter of the Museum is presented to the public: 471 artist records, a collection whose main core was collected over the years by Giorgio Maffei and to which the GAM has added more, in a logic of future growth of the collection. The exhibition will allow you to see the record covers - many designed by the artists themselves - and from the day of its opening it will be possible to listen to both in the exhibition and in the Video Library, renewed in its consultation service, all the audio tracks and read the internal documents of the albums. The collection is representative of many of the most important artistic experiments in the field of sound and poetry, starting from the early futurist sound research with performances of dynamic declamation and musical executions by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and Luigi Russolo. Dadaism is represented by works by Richard Huelsenbeck, Kurt Schwitters, Tristan Tzara, Hugo Ball and Raoul Hausmann with their sound-poems composed of syllables in a pure asemantic relationship. The works of Arthur Petronio are present, who, under the influence of Wassily Kandinsky, elaborated a theory of verbophonie in 1919, and the informal research of Karel Appel and Jean Dubuffet, conducted with sounds taken from elements of nature. The collection includes Lettrism, a record with the compositions of Isidore Isou and Maurice Lemaître from 1958. That same year saw the birth of the magazine "Cinquème Saison" directed by Herni Chopin, present with many other works in the collection, and which produced records by Bernard Heidsieck and Ferdinand Kriwet, also represented. The collection also includes research on silence by Yves Klein and John Cage. The entire Fluxus production is present with works by Joseph Beuys, Philip Corner, Robert Filliou, Dick Higgins, Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, Ben Vautier, Wolf Vostell and others. Performance Poetry of the Beat Generation is included with numerous records curated by John Giorno and with the participation of William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg and all the poets of the revolutionary Dial-a-Poem project. In addition to Beuys, some of the main figures of the season of conceptual neo-avant-gardes are represented: Lawrence Weiner, one of the main artists who was able to consistently combine parallel interests in records, books, and videos; Allan Kaprow, with his How to Make a Happening, and Richard Long with A Round of Desert Flowers. Much of Laurie Anderson's production from the 1980s is present: from multimedia musical performances to Spoken Poetry. Also from the same season are records with contributions from Christian Boltanski, Bertrand Lavier, and Georg Baselitz. From the 1990s, Christian Marclay and Katharina Fritsch are the two main figures in the collection. Finally, from the 2000s, the collection includes works by Henrik Hakansson, Carsten Nicolai, Rodney Graham, and Martin Creed. The collection has also been enriched by the first 13 releases of the Xong collection - Artist Records, a branch of Xing, dedicated to artists who see the sonic field as one of the platforms in which to expand their worlds and imagination, using "The space of the record" to focus and amplify their poetics. On Thursday, June 27, the evening of the inauguration, a program of 3 sound performances will involve artists who are part of the GAM collection.
