The exhibition reconstructs the historical period of contemporary art around the fall of the Berlin Wall, particularly significant for the West, through the selection of various representative artists who actively worked between 1988 and 1993. This phase of historicization is the result of a study conducted through a reading that is still unpublished today, also anticipatory and why not revealing, of the work done by artists, curators, and gallery owners who animated that brief season leaving a sure imprint of interest for the following years. The exhibition characterization has the merit of taking us back to those years both for those who lived them and for those who were not yet born, describing the sensations and atmospheres of a millennium that was coming to an end through the feelings that today's young people love to define with the term vibes. The artists in the exhibition share a particular awareness of the historical moment they were experiencing, so much so that they could ascribe it to a common feeling of ethical responsibility, with outcomes certainly far from the already established currents operating since the late sixties and up to the eighties. The historical awareness was focused on the new global reality that was emerging on the horizon, after the watershed event of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the dismantling of the USSR, and the consequent end of the Cold War, with the return of war in the European Balkans and in Iraq. Realities that had nothing to do with the social realities of the two previous decades, characterized, the first, by an ideological euphoria that then had no actual outcome but only socio-political repercussions at least in Western Europe; and the second, the eighties, by hedonism with the effervescent return of the subject on one side and on the other by a fashionable practice of social disengagement. From an artistic point of view, the correspondences to these socio-political orientations, also active in the nineties, were Poverism, related behavioral trends such as actionism, happenings, and performances, and those of the Italian Transavanguardia, the German New Wilds, and the countless epigones automatically generated by the mythical dream of the return to painting. But the world, now restless, was irreversibly leaning towards instability and with the decline of ideologies, the so-called 'neotechnologies' were slowly emerging with confidence, strong-willed, which in the meantime had already gained a foothold in many sectors and were ready to phagocytize, digitizing, anything in their path, overflowing even into fields of knowledge previously marked and codified by centuries of traditional linear history. The same neotechnologies with their large-scale democratization processes offered the world new forms of freedom, at least promised, where 'everything is possible', changing its paradigms and generating confusion but regaining for artists a new idea of experimentation, a new ethical sense, giving signals of a new historical awareness without the burdensome 'subject' that remained unexpressed.
