From 7 December to 10 March 2024
In the International Late Mannerism room of the Sabauda Gallery (first floor, room 13), from 7 December 2023 to 10 March 2024, the Royal Museums of Turin are hosting the Antonio Campi exhibition in Torre Pallavicina, which brings together the surviving panels of a large cycle painted by the great Cremonese mannerist in the 1570s.
Second stage of the dossier exhibition, open from 19 September to 3 December 2023 at the Diocesan Museum of Cremona, this important initiative highlights the painter's activity for the Oratory of Santa Lucia in Torre Pallavicina, a municipality in the diocese of Cremona, today in the province of Bergamo, and presents what remains of a large altarpiece with a Christological theme which included the two panels with the Journey to Calvary and the Resurrection, belonging to the collections of the Sabauda Gallery, and the two panels with the Oration in the the garden and Christ before Caiaphas from the Canesso Gallery, who kindly granted the loan.
The Oration in the Garden, characterized by an intense pathos, and Christ before Caiaphas, of rare realistic suggestion, stand out for the use of a rich and refined palette with marked chromatic agreements between the shades of pink, yellow and green, in contrast with the night backgrounds. The first scene shows a magnificent lunar landscape, while the second stands out against an intense and impenetrable black; both are proof of that luministic experimentalism that characterizes the painter's maturity.
The two paintings were exhibited to the public for the first time in the Milanese headquarters of the Canesso Gallery in 2021, after having been published in 1974 by the art historian Maria Luisa Ferrari and then dispersed for a long time. Their recent discovery has once again brought the question of Torre Pallavicina to the attention of scholars and, thanks to in-depth archival research, it has been possible to establish with certainty that the two paintings belong to the same pictorial cycle as the two Turin panels.
