From 11 November 2023 to 18 February 2024 the Magazzino delle Idee of Trieste presents India today. 17 photographers from Independence to the present day, curated by Filippo Maggia, produced and organized by ERPAC – Regional Body for the Cultural Heritage of Friuli Venezia Giulia, the first exhibition to collect and present at a European level seventy years of Indian photography in a single large exhibition project consisting of over 500 works including photographs, videos and installations.
Through visual stories, experiences, testimonies and investigations, India today traces a historical-social path that moves from Mahatma Gandhi and the decade immediately following independence from the British Empire in 1947 up to the present day. From the postcolonial past to the affirmation among the major international economies, the exhibition testifies to the radical transformation of which the Indian subcontinent is the protagonist, thanks to an exponential development that must deal with profound contradictions and social inequalities. The photographic gaze of seventeen artists on display captures the many aspects of this evolution, between tradition and change: Kanu Gandhi, Bhupendra Karia, Pablo Bartholomew, Ketaki Sheth, Sheba Chhachhi, Raghu Rai, Sunil Gupta, Anita Khemka, Serena Chopra , Dileep Prakash, Vicky Roy, Amit Madheshiya, Senthil Kumaran Rajendran, Vinit Gupta, Ishan Tanka, Soumya Sankar Bose, Uzma Mohsin.
Established authors and new protagonists of contemporary Indian photography, an increasingly attentive and profound interpreter of the present and near future that distinguish the Indian subcontinent. The exhibition presents the works of the 17 artists following a chronological order that advances over decades, from the mid-twentieth century to the new millennium, then leaving ample space for the works of contemporary authors. A story told through the images that the artists took while living the direct experience of the moment consciously participated in and returned through photography, adopted in this case as a witness. In the exhibition itinerary, each author is introduced by a statement that describes the genesis and development of the research of the work carried out.
