Spaces Returned. Tobia Scarpa. Recent projects for the community is the new exhibition at the Benetton Foundation Studies Research, dedicated to the recent work of architect Tobia Scarpa, which will open on Friday, December 13 at 6 pm at Ca' Scarpa in Treviso and will be open until Sunday, February 23, 2025.

The exhibition, curated by J.K. Mauro Pierconti, Mauro Piantelli, and Ilaria Cavallari, explores the theme of the recovery of historic buildings, then returned to the community through various forms and for different uses: concerts, exhibitions, libraries, services for citizens.

Given their historical significance, these are generally buildings that rise in the heart of their respective cities; these refined and well-conceived interventions contribute to renewing and revitalizing the urban fabric, creating new points of attraction and socialization for the citizens and for all those who visit, even just for a fleeting visit. The increase in services in the historic city also has the merit of shortening distances for its inhabitants, thus favoring a lifestyle less tied to means of transportation. The idea of a more livable and accessible city is therefore present in the minds of architects, and acting on historic buildings, in a country like Italy, ensures countless benefits.

The exhibition will present, through sketches, drawings, photographs, and texts, five recent projects by Tobia Scarpa: the Accademia Galleries in Venice (2005-2013; 2015-2018), the church of San Teonisto (2017), the Prisons Galleries (2018), and Ca' Scarpa (2020), all in Treviso. Finally, the project for the new Cultural Center of Treviglio (Bergamo), which will be presented publicly for the first time and is currently under construction.

These projects may seem similar in terms of intervention type, yet Tobia Scarpa's action is always revealing of uniqueness: each project is surprising in its ability to give meaning to a place, as if the final work were the result of something well "educated," to use a word dear to Tobia.

The narrative of the five projects will be articulated throughout the exhibition space at Ca' Scarpa, with particular attention given to showing the transformation of a historic space into a contemporary building, not just in its use.

Some specially prepared drawings will show the transformations that have taken place: the transition from a construction that clearly shows the signs of time and destruction suffered – as in the case, for example, of the church of San Teonisto, heavily damaged by a bomb during the Second World War – to a usable space, today and in the years to come, thanks to a reading of the pre-existing structure, which has then taken shape in a new unit that, while preserving its identity, has allowed the building to fully function with a unique and recognizable architectural quality.

Sketches and drawings will immediately make the visitor, even if not an expert, understand the commitment and creativity that an architectural project carries within itself, up to its completion. It is a long process that leads to the definition of its parts, in continuous dialogue with the pre-existing and aimed at giving meaning to the space that is thus generated.

However, it is important to emphasize Tobia Scarpa's starting point in his research, which can only be respect for the place in which he operates and which welcomes him; he then relates to that place, "harmonizing" with it, and ensures that, when the work is finished, it is able to produce new vibrations "in sympathy" with the original ones.

Linking the built projects, as a unique graphic sign, is a new photographic survey, entrusted to Michele Nastasi, which will showcase some of the values of Tobia Scarpa's architecture.

The exhibition is deliberately set up to be simple, as it is conceived as a traveling exhibition, adaptable to various types of spaces in the different cities where it will be hosted.
