The Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Siena is located in the historic center of the city. The museum is housed in the spaces of the museum complex of Santa Maria della Scala. The museum was founded by Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli in the 1920s and 1930s.
The collections include two important sections: the topographical and the antiquarium. The topographical section provides an overview of the archaeology of the territory with particular attention to archaeological finds from the area of the Sienese territory, Chianti, and the upper Val d'Elsa. Here, artifacts such as burial sets and funerary urns found during excavation campaigns are exhibited.
The antiquarium is the section where all the museum's public and private collections converge. The museum has increased its heritage with two important acquisitions: the Chigi Zondadari and the Bonci Casuccini. The Bonci Casuccini collection, formed in the early 20th century, consists of materials from the province transferred to Siena. Within the complex, you can find the Municipal Library and the Academy of the Fisiocritici.
