The Graves Gallery is an art gallery in the city of Sheffield, England. The gallery is extremely active in the cultural landscape of the city: it hosts permanent exhibitions from the historical and contemporary collection of both British and European art together with a program of temporary exhibitions. Inside the gallery more or less the entire history of art is traced with artists such as JMW Turner, Alfred Sisley and Sir Stanley Spencer, to Helen Chadwick, Marc Quinn and Bridget Riley. The Graves Art Gallery was born thanks to John George Graves, a businessman, enriched with one of the first mail order businesses in the country. He also donated his art collection (around 700 paintings) and many of which can still be seen today. Other benefactors are John Newton Mappin, of Mappin and Webb. Thanks to careful research and curation by the directors of the gallery, today it has works and artists such as Walter Sickert, Harold Gilman, Gwen John, CRW Nevinson, Jacob Epstein, Stanley Spencer, William Roberts, Paul Nash, Christopher Wood, David Bomberg, LS Lowry, John Minton, Henry Moore, Keith Vaughan, Prunella Clough and Frank Auerbach. More recently, enthusiasm and commitment to contemporary art has led to the purchase of major works of art such as Marc Quinn's Kiss and Sam Taylor-Wood's Self-Portrait Suspended VII.
