In the heart of the Po Valley in the province of Mantua stands the majestic Monastic Complex of San Benedetto Po, founded in 1007 by Tedaldo di Canossa, grandfather of the famous Matilde. The Monastery has played a central role in the history of Italian monasticism for its religious, political, and cultural commitment. Visiting the Monastery allows you to relive the periods and events that have characterized the history of this architectural gem. Starting from the Cloister of the Seculars, you walk along the evocative path once traveled by monks, pilgrims, and artists who have succeeded over more than a thousand years. From the scenic Barberini staircase, you access the upper floors of the Monastery, where the Civic Museum of Monastero di Polirone is currently set up, a vivid testimony of the popular culture of the Po Valley. Continuing, you arrive at the late Gothic style Cloister of San Simeone, on the ground floor of which were the cells for passing monks, the cellar, the tailoring shop, and the shoemaker's shop. Remarkable are the frescoes in the lunettes depicting the stories of San Simeone, probably created by artists from the Flemish school. From the cloister, you directly access the Chapter Hall, one of the oldest and most important places in the Monastery as the administrative center of the cenobium, inside which you can admire the remains of abbots' tombs from the 1500s. Exiting the hall, you reach the largest cloister, dedicated to San Benedetto. Continuing the visit, you arrive at the Refectory, a place used for the monks' meals, where you can now contemplate the painted architecture frescoed by the young Antonio Allegri, known as Correggio.
