Pellico House

Pellico House

Located in the scenic Mondagli square, one of the most evocative corners of the historic center of Saluzzo, it is a building of medieval origin, located just outside the circle of walls of 1280, near the ancient Mondagli gate demolished in 1890.

The restorations, carried out by the Municipality after the purchase in the mid-nineties of the last century, allow us to reread its history: it is a medieval building, transformed in later periods, with pointed arches frescoed on the facade; in the sixteenth century the loggias on the top floor were added, now walled up, while the closed and terraced loggia on the square floor dates back to the early nineteenth century. On the first floor there is a valuable neoclassical room, decorated on the walls and ceiling, with a mosaic floor.

In the small apartment on the first floor, the writer and patriot Silvio Pellico was born on June 25, 1789 and spent the first years of his childhood, until 1793, but he kept a fond memory of his hometown throughout his life.

To the generosity of Giuseppina Pellico, the Municipality of Saluzzo also owes the original and most important nucleus of the collection of manuscripts and translations that belonged to the illustrious writer and patriot, now preserved in the historical funds of the Library. Since 2013 Casa Pellico has been included in the circuit of the National Association of Memory Homes.
