The Ara Pacis Museum

The Ara Pacis Museum houses the ancient Ara Pacis Augustae. The Altar of Peace of Augustus is a monument built by Augustus in 9 BC on the occasion of the Roman Peace, the long period of peace imposed on the states of the Roman Empire thanks to the seizure of power by Augustus. Originally the Ara Pacis was located in an area of the Campo Marzio consecrated to the celebration of victories, on the edge of the city of Rome where the consul returning from a military expedition lost the relative powers and regained possession of his civil powers. This monument represents one of the most significant testimonies of Augustan art and is intended to symbolize the peace and prosperity achieved as a result of the Pax Romana. On the square where the Ara Pacis Museum is located is the imposing mausoleum of Augustus, the funerary monument where the remains of the emperor Augustus, his relatives and closest friends were kept. The spaces of the museum designed by the studio of the American architect Richard Meier, while not visually interrupting the continuity with the outside, favor the silence necessary for the full enjoyment of the monument. In the quiet it is possible to fully appreciate the mythical origins of Rome and the enterprises of Augustus who gave the empire the possibility of living times so happy as to be called seculum aureum. The museum also hosts numerous temporary exhibitions.
