The Colosseum

The Flavian Amphitheater, more commonly known by the name of the Colosseum , rises in the heart of the city of Rome and is part of the large archaeological area of the Colosseum archaeological park which includes, the area of the Roman Forum and the Palatine, the Domus Aurea on the Oppio hill, the arch of Constantine and the Meta Sudans. The building, called the Colosseum because of a colossal statue that stood nearby, was built in the 1st century AD at the behest of the emperors of the Flavian dynasty, and hosted, until the end of the ancient age, shows of great popular appeal, such as the hunts and gladiatorial games. The building was, and remains today, a spectacle in itself. It is in fact the largest amphitheater in the world, capable of offering surprising scenographic apparatus, as well as services for spectators. Symbol of the glories of the empire, the Amphitheater has changed its face and function over the centuries, offering itself as a structured but open space to the Roman community. In 438, with the abolition of the gladiatorial games at the behest of Valentinian III, the amphitheater underwent a slow and progressive decline, so much so that it was used in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance as a quarry for materials, also used for the construction of St. Peter's Basilica, and as shelter for animals and home to artisan workshops and homes, while the process of its Christianization is long. From the romantic period in which the charm of the ruin attracted writers and artists we soon moved on to that of systematic excavations and restorations. Today the Amphitheater is a monument to the works of human ingenuity that survive time and still presents itself as a welcoming and dynamic structure that offers a broad overview of the internal spaces, but also suggestive views of the city when looking out from the external arches . It periodically hosts temporary exhibitions related to ancient themes and its relationship with the contemporary, as well as modern shows. This legacy of events and experiences has made the Amphitheater a place that is renewed every day, significant for everyone and capable of telling a story to everyone.
