How can we use technology to enrich our knowledge about trees and their power to cool our cities?
Re-Leaf invites visitors to explore the urban landscape through a new lens: that of trees, analyzing their density and variety. Based on research from the MIT Senseable City Lab and Professor Sara Beery's Tree D-fusion model at MIT, the exhibition shows how artificial intelligence can be used to map urban greenery with unprecedented precision, from entire cities down to individual trees.
Focusing on Dubai, Amsterdam, Los Angeles, and Rome, Re-Leaf visualizes the distribution of trees as dynamic "green skyscrapers." These physical models, generated through the analysis of street and satellite images, allow visitors to intuitively compare the presence of greenery in different urban neighborhoods. Moving within this "forest," it is possible to observe where trees thrive, where they are scarce, and how vegetation influences city life.
Some screens offer further insights, showing how the collected data allows for transitioning from satellite views to close-ups of selected trees, highlighting variations in species, age, leaf density, and cooling capacity — crucial factors for designing cities more resilient to climate change. An interactive app, accessible via QR code, digitally extends the experience: visitors can explore each individual tree, discovering its morphology, species, and contribution to cooling.
